Guiding Philosophy

Picture of blue butterfly creating ripples on water surface
Many mystics, academics, and practitioners have influenced my beliefs, values, and practices. My university studies included cultural anthropology, shamanism, religion, and psychology. My Master's degree work centered on personal transformation and leadership, which my experience reflects.

We are all inextricably connected through systems that need to be understood in order to optimally function within them. We are part of many systems simultaneously: families, organizations, social groups , ecosystems, etc. When a change is made in one part or element of a system, it is felt by all, and the system changes to adapt. This can be seen in the "butterfly effect" of chaos theory, in which a small thing such as a butterfly flapping its wings can contribute to something much larger, such as a tornado. This is why changing yourself (whether your internal thoughts and beliefs or your external behaviors) is so powerful. Change yourself, and you change your world.

I am guided by my vision of a connected network of healthy, whole individuals (either within a family, a workplace, or another group) that realistically prepare themselves for the challenges they will encounter, then capably and courageously address them. I operate with a partnership model. I do not come as the expert or as the rescuer. Instead I build capacity and understanding, often by shining a light upon unnoticed strengths, weaknesses, or important relationships. I facilitate and nurture the emergence of your own innate knowing and ability, and share my own clarity, calm and confidence with you in a spirit of respect, support and service.

Transformational Coaching

As a coach, I create a safe, confidential environment where you can relax and I can listen deeply to you without judgment, paying attention to what I see and hear, and offering those reflections back to you. This two way dialogue is largely characterized by powerful questioning to get at the heart of the changes you desire. I support you by helping you access the inherent strengths, knowledge and intuition you already possess to address your goals, and grow additional capabilities that you need. When it adds value, and when you are open to it, I can introduce new tools and techniques, alternative perspectives and new possibilities for you to consider. You then have a broader palette from which to choose how you will respond to and succeed with your challenges.

Tarot

In my belief, the cards are not magic, although through hundreds of years the symbols and metaphors have become part of the collective unconscious described by Carl Jung. Tarot works through visual symbolism, which allows me to better access my own intuition and tune into what is happening with you and around you.

In reading the cards, I illuminate influences and options you may not have considered before. I don't ask that you accept everything I see. What I tell you from the cards should always be evaluated through your own knowledge and experience, and you will decide what wisdom to take with you from the cards.

I do not use the Tarot for fortunetelling. Although many Tarot layouts or patterns generate a final outcome card, I do not regard such cards as destiny. You always have the ability to exercise your free will. The interpretation I provide models a possible trajectory of events based on the current situation. But if you alter your path as a result of the new awareness you have gained, you will change your future.

Intuitive and Empathic Connection

Picture of meditating person radiating energy waves
Our bodies signal their state to others in many different ways. We emit weak electromagnetic radiation, give off barely measurable light (photons), secrete hormones and pheromones, display facial micro-expressions, etc. Animals sense and react to all of these signals instinctively.

Intuitives and empaths operate in much the same way. I don't measure or calculate all of these signals scientifically, and I don't always know why I know something, and yet I do. My knowing often appears for me as a visual image. When I receive an energy impression from you during the course of a Tarot reading or coaching session, and in that context I am happy to share that additional information with you as part of my service.

Symbols and Rituals

Symbols and rituals speak to the subconscious part of the brain. They go beyond cognitive limitations to overcome deep-seated beliefs that are holding you back. This can dramatically shift behaviors or thoughts that no longer serve you. For instance, if you are experiencing an unpleasant work situation or a relationship you are trying to change, create a ritual around it to first change yourself using symbols that speak to you at a deep level. The ripple effect is that the system around you will change, and indirectly, so will others.

During a coaching session or Tarot consultation, I like to allow plenty of time for you to get to the "designing action" stage in which you plan what you will do as a result of your new awareness. (This is easier to do in a full hour session, but it can be done in half an hour if we watch our time together carefully). Focusing on the most potent symbols that resonate with you, incorporating them into a simple ritual can be a powerful way to manifest the changes you desire. I can assist in eliciting those symbols and metaphors, and offer suggestions or guidance on how to weave them into a meaningful ritual that will help embed the change into your subconscious.

"A symbol is a reminder, something that evokes the echo of an inner experience in the beholder. The deeper and more significant the experience, the more powerful the symbol. It may take the form of an image, a sound, a word, an action, an object, anything that has a concrete existence in the physical world."
